Fishing for Bluegills

Bluegills are small fish when compared to things like bass, catfish, and trout. They are however extremely mild in flavor and they also make some of the best bait you can have for catching those catfish, bass, and even the trout. You will be surprised that even though these are small fish you will have a blast catching them.

The best bait when you are going to fish for these perch is a worm. Worms can be threaded on the hook and this makes it a lot harder for the perch to steal your bait. Bluegill perch are very adept at bait stealing. Their mouths are small and they can successfully work the bait off of the hook without you even knowing they are there.

When you plan to be fishing for these perch you want to use very small hooks. Most people that really like to fish for these little fish will use a hair hook to fish with. These are simply the smallest of the perch hooks that you can buy.

Some people fish for these fish with a cane ole and a bobber. The bobber is set so that the worm on the hook will be positioned in the best depth for the fish. When the bobber is pulled completely under water then you jerk back quickly to set the hook in the perch’s mouth. This can be great fun, especially when you are watching the bobber jig up and down and you are waiting for the moment it goes completely underwater.

Another popular method for fishing for these perch is to use a rod and reel with no weight on the end of your line. You will cast the line out as if you were fly fishing and allow it to slowly sink. Before the line reaches the bottom the perch should grab the bait and try to swim away. You set your hook when all of the slack goes out of your line or when you feel the tug on the other end.

These little fish can be found most frequently in areas that are close to the bank and generally where there is some shade. In the deeper waters you will find these perch close to stumps or hiding in tree tops. This is because they are by far one of the favorite foods of many different species of fish.
